Olivia De Berardinis : “I could not resist using this Hokusai masterpiece (c. 1825) as a background for this painting. It had so much passion, rendered by a master, who captured all with such spare line and texture. The arm and hand reminded me of Picasso, and the great influence Japanese prints had on Western art. Another artist under the spell of these amazing Japanese ukio-e (woodblock prints) was the Art Nouveau master Aubrey Beardsley (1873-1898), who’s art, in turn, was on my mind. So I kept this painting monochromatic. Masuimi had posed wearing an anime wig, and I adapted the real tattoo of twin dragons on her back, to fit her painted form. I had a great time juggling so many influences in one work.”
I only met Masuimi once, at one of the NYC Smack! fetish balls. She was active on the IAM pages of the BMEZine.com back in the dial up days, and would often comment on the artwork I’d created, like the cover for body modification trade paper PAIN, using her for the model. This print is signed by both Olivia and the late Masuimi, and was professionally framed and matted. I shot this as well as I could to reduce reflections.
