This portrait is meant to of the master of Gothic literature in America, Edgar Allan Poe, but seen here performed by the same actor as my Reanimator painting, the terribly underrated Jeffrey Combs. Back when I still had a studio, and a life, I got to attend the first Sleepy Hollow Film Festival in 2019, another thing that’d be later derailed by the COVID lockdown. Among the many events was the live performance of Jeffrey’s one man show NEVERMORE, directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli. If you thought Combs is brilliant at bringing gravitas to B movie productions, he shone live on stage channeling the spirit of Poe. The show has us in attendance at what’s meant to be a public reading by Poe himself, shortly after the death of his wife, and as he addresses his public, he drunkenly ranges from confronting his personal feuds with other critics and poets, laments the paths he’s trodden, and reads a number of his most acclaimed works. It fucking rules. I’m sure Old Edgar would’ve love it, and it made for a perfect Halloween. 9” x 12”, oil on canvas.
